I mean, if we go by your logic, then a good chunk of "Gundams" in the entire franchise shouldn't be recognized as such because they're not the typical RX-78-2 tricolor, e.g. the Nu "Gundam" being mostly black and white. We’ve seen that phase shift armor requires power to function and that more hits causes it to drain the battery faster (seen in early seed if memory serves). The needle attack was likely custom tailored to overwhelm and overheat phase shift armor.
