Found in 1968, the Hong Kong Society for the Deaf (the Society) was incorporated in Hong Kong under the Companies Ordinance on December 29, 1976. It is a non-profit making organization which aims to promote the well-being of the hearing impaired and seeks to ensure equalization of opportunities for hearing impaired persons.

香港手語的起源. 香港手語的源流可追溯至1949年，有20多位聾人從南京和上海來到香港，當時他們在香港設立補習班，教導聾人讀書，由於教和學是用手語，他們的手語便在聾人之間流傳開去。 如遇到新事物而未有手語可表達時，聾人便自創手語，日積月累，本土香港手語詞彙也就豐富起來。 隨後愈來愈多聾人有機會接觸內地和外國資訊，亦會融合其他地方的手語。 學習手語注意要素. 手形 - 香港手語基本手形一般約有40-50個。 位置 - 位置不同，整個意思也有所不同。 方向 - 單手或雙手活動的方向，如由內而外，左至右，上至下等。 口形 - 有時我們會見到打手語人士，以口語配合，希望把意思更清晰表達。 表情 - 面部表情是手語的一部份，只要投入其中，自然會流露適當的表情！
