Hong Kong has been facing two air pollution issues, namely local street-level pollution and regional smog problem. Commercial vehicles are the main source of street-level pollution.
Hong Kong's air pollution is mainly contributed by motor vehicles, marine vessels and power plants. The two greatest challenges are local street-level pollution and regional smog. Diesel vehicles, particularly trucks, buses and light buses, are the main source of street-level pollution.
Air pollution in Hong Kong is considered a serious problem. In 2004, visibility was less than eight kilometers for 30 per cent of the year. Cases of asthma and bronchial infections have soared due to reduced air quality.
In 2022, the total emissions of major air pollutants in Hong Kong were 4 390 tonnes of SO 2, 50 010 tonnes of NOx, 2 840 tonnes of PM 10, 2 220 tonnes of PM 2.5, 21 130 tonnes of VOC and 54 850 tonnes of CO, respectively.
