Amami Oshima (奄美大島, Amami Ōshima) is the largest island in the Satsunan island chain that runs between Kyushu and Okinawa and belongs to Kagoshima Prefecture. The island's climate, beaches, fauna and flora (including mangrove forests and large ferns) make the island characteristically similar to the Okinawan Islands to the south.

Saigo Takamori (1828-1877), one of modern Japan's founding fathers, was at one point during his eventful life banned to Amami Oshima for a few years. His former residence is open to the public, exhibiting photos and equipment used by Saigo.
Amami Oshima is a relatively large island, and it takes around two hours to drive from top to bottom. The island's largest town is Amami City (also referred to as Naze), located on the northern coast near the center of the island. This is where ferries from Kagoshima and Okinawa arrive.
Get There. Amami Oshima 's coastline features a host of beautiful, uncrowded beaches for sunbathing, swimming and snorkeling. Many beaches provide little beyond a parking lot and public restrooms, if they have any facilities at all.
Ameyoko (アメ横) is a busy market street along the Yamanote Line tracks between Okachimachi and Ueno stations. The name "Ameyoko" is a short form for "Ameya Yokocho" (candy store alley), as candies were traditionally sold there.
Yokohama (横浜) is Japan's second largest city with a population of over three million. Yokohama is located less than half an hour south of Tokyo by train and is the capital of Kanagawa Prefecture. Towards the end of the Edo Period (1603-1868), during which Japan maintained a policy of self-isolation, Yokohama's port was one of the first to be opened to foreign trade in 1859.
