Nara is very easily accessible from both Kyoto and Osaka by train. Can be done as a day trip but you may consider spending the night as there is plenty to see in Nara. Museums, cafes and plenty of scenic walks (with deer of course). The park is full of friendly deer. You can buy deer cookies to feed them.

Toshodai-ji temple is the Diametric opposite of Todai-ji temple. Literally and figuratively. There are no crowds of tourists and deer beggars. You will be here alone or almost alone. Most tourists go to the center of Nara, and Toshodaiji is in the opposite direction. We walked and spent 40 minutes or even an hour.
