That timing would be better for the middle of the country and heading down to somewhere like Kyoto. Japan -Guide has reports, and while not as fickle as cherry blossom, it is weather dependent.

Having traveled to Tokyo, Takayama, Kanazawa, Kyoto, Osaka and Hiroshima, we’ve decided to wrap up our trip in Hokkaido. We like nature, scenic places and drives, and hiking. Not excited about Onsen.
