There are more hotels/ryokans around the Furano station, which is also served by highway bus from Sapporo direct in 2 hours. In comparison, there are more pensions in Biei though widely spread out in the undulating plains.

Some people want to save money and don't mind a slower train. That said, to Hitachinaka, the express Tokiwa is available and you need to get an express ticket.
