We have already booked a hotel/ car in Hachinohe as a 'backup' but we would prefer to stay in Aomori for the festival if we could.

There are more hotels/ryokans around the Furano station, which is also served by highway bus from Sapporo direct in 2 hours. In comparison, there are more pensions in Biei though widely spread out in the undulating plains.
