As mentioned koyo timing is less fickle than sakura blossom. Consider these popular and famous koyo spots. Early Nov - Hiraizumi, Yamadera, Naruko gorge.

The pillar rocks, waterfalls and koyo spots can be done within 2 hours. From Sapporo, visit Otaru as a day trip and drop by Jozankei onsen upon return.

Visited northern Kyushu for 10 days in end March commencing in Takeo onsen, followed by Karatsu in Saga Prefecture.
