From Haneda to Kyoto, the Shinkansen is faster when you consider the waiting time for the domestic flight and KIX to Kyoto. Take the Keikyu Line train to Shinagawa and the Shinkansen to Kyoto. Spring break travel seems to pick up by March. Both February and March are pretty dry months, which can also mean more heat along the coasts.

Google Maps and Navitime aren't really showing me options which incorporate buses. Getting around Kyoto efficiently seems pretty complicated.
