遮打先生於1846年在加爾各答出生，是一位亞美尼亞裔貿易商人兼銀行家，其後獲授爵士勛銜。 遮打爵士大半生均活躍於香港馬圈。 他於1865年首次到跑馬地觀賽。 香港賽馬會於1884年成立時，遮打爵士亦是創會成員之一。 他自1892年起擔任馬會主席，直至1926年去世時為止。 他還介紹友人摩地爵士（麼地道即以其姓氏命名）加入馬圈，一度共同擁有馬房，並且取得佳績。 1884年，遮打爵士和摩地爵士在26場賽事之中勝出了17場。 多年來，遮打爵士共曾奪得8屆香港打吡冠軍，而麼地爵士則曾勝出11屆。 遮打爵士於馬會成立之初肩負領導重任，實在功不可沒。 他於1915年確立馬會把盈餘撥捐慈善的先例。 1926年，馬會提出接納華人會員的特別決議案，亦是在他支持下獲得通過。
