組建南洋商業銀行. 1949年仲夏,渡江戰役的硝煙剛剛散盡,解放軍馬不停蹄揮師南下,全國解放在即。 莊世平看到,香港作為國際貿易中心的地位日益突出,轉口貿易、旅遊業的發展必然會促進金融業的蓬勃興旺,他認為新中國應該在那裡佔有一席之地。 加上解放初期,新中國受到部分西方國家的經濟封鎖和物資禁運,要打破封鎖、聯繫華僑、溝通僑匯就一定要在香港建立新中國自己的銀行。 在一無經驗、二少資本的情況下,經過緊張的籌備,莊世平牽頭組建的南商於1949 年12 月14日在港島中區德輔道中167 號正式成立。 1950 年,莊世平又在澳門開辦了南通( 澳門中行前身)。 這兩間銀行,是新中國成立後以私營名義最先在香港、澳門當地註冊的中資銀行。
