The clan has eight age-groups known as 'Bibingilo' (lasting between 8 to 12 years) and every young man who undergoes the circumcision process is placed in a specific category depending on the period he underwent the initiation. These are Banyange (1950-1958), Bamaina (1960-1970), Bachuma (1972-1986), Basawa (1988-1998), Bakolongolo (2000-2010), Bakikwameti (2012-2022), Bakananachi (2024-2034), Bakinyikewi (2036-2048). This forms a cyclical system spanning over 100 years. This year's initiates, according to the above system, are placed under Bakikwameti since they belong to the age group of all men circumcised between 2012-2022. However, to differentiate them from those circumcised earlier but within the same period, the elders introduced sub-sets in that those who underwent the process in 2012, for instance, would form the first age set - that is Bakwikwameti no. 1. Those circumcised in 2014 belong to Bakikwemeti no. 2, the 2016 group form Bakwikweti no. 3 and so on. The 2020 initia...

When the boy feels he ready to face the knife, he approached his father and informs him about it. The father then invites elders to help him plan for the big event by putting in place all the required materials. The boy then gets his jingles (chinyimba) ready and once he gets a go ahead from his father, he starts calling (khulanga) relatives by visiting their homes while ringing the bells and accompanied by a crowd full of soloists. During the process, those who are approached by the boy must give something in appreciation and they must attend or be present during the circumcision day. The last person to be called is the paternal uncle and is the one who gifts the boy the final present which is usually the biggest of all. In most cases, this could be a cow, goat, sheep and so forth depending on his ability.

Upon returning from his uncle's place, the boy is ushered in his father's homestead in full swing for the final celebration called Khuminya. The day marks the epitome of all that is mad and weird as the men and women engage in zestful traditional dances, drinking of local brew popularly known as Busaa and feasting. The event ends in the morning when the boy is taken to the "anointed river" where the uncle smears him with clay and leads him home for circumcision as other enthusiasts sing the final song of courage popularly known as "siwoyawoya". The candidate's sister carries his clothes and the jingles. She also undergoes some ritual of mud smearing but on the face, hands and legs. She is the one who will be preparing food for his brother. While coming from the river, the boy uses a different route from the one he used while heading to the stream. Few metres from home, the father of the boy comes and leads him to the circumcision spot from where he is left to stand alone at hands ak...

Circumcision is a very sensitive matter among the Bukusu people and is not just casually undertaken by anyone. It is believed that initiators are as good as the future of the candidate would be. As such, person to circumcise the boy is carefully chosen by elders. In fact, all qualified initiators are often summoned and vetted prior to the circumcision month. Initiators often come from a specific clan, they must be married and have completed marriage cultural practices including dowry payment. An initiator should not be baled headed or lame, and his firstborn child must be a boy. During the whole circumcision period, the initiator should keep of sexual intercourse to avoid causing a calamity on the D-Day. It is a taboo for the knife used to cut the father to be used to circumcise his son. This, if happens, could lead to a spirit of confusion in the family and the son could run mad. Similarly, a knife used to cut the child outside wedlock could not be used to cut the child who was bor...
