Unless you land in CTS after 5pm, consider travelling to Hakodate right after landing which takes about 3 hours direct by JR Hokuto express train. With 2 luggage, send 1 to Sapporo hotel upon landing in CTS with desired delivery date stated on delivery form.

Smart Ex is often suggested as a good way to buy tickets before travelling to Japan, but the app has terrible reviews on the app store with complaints that they cannot link to a credit card. My cousin and I reached Yufuin late afternoon yesterday and checked in to our beautiful Tanokura Ryokan. The drive from Fukuoka to Oita prefecture is just so beautiful.

Wife and I will be in Kyoto as part of our Japan trip later this year, second time to Japan first time to there.
