第1步：聽力評估. 與配戴眼鏡前要驗眼一樣，買助聽器前都要先驗耳，透過純音聽力測驗（pure tone audiometry，PTA）了解聽障程度，及中耳阻抗聽力測驗（impedance audiometry，IA），診斷耳朵健康狀況，如有沒有中耳積水、耳膜穿孔等，看看是否適合佩戴助聽器。 如經醫生診斷及測試證實聽力有永久損失（不能經醫學手術等方法矯正），可到聽力中心選配助聽器。 弱聽級別. 健全聽覺人士能接收25分貝或以下的音量，弱聽者則只能接收高於25分貝的音量，當中再分為5個級別，由輕度弱聽（只能接收高於26 – 40分貝的音量）到極度弱聽（只能接收91分貝或以上的音量）。 該找誰評估？ 弱聽人士一般可到聽力中心進行聽力評估，部分中心更會提供折扣給予持有長者咭的人士。
