I guess we're looking in the wrong places. We've bought a Rolex and a Gucci watch on the island and only saved the sales tax compared to US pricing.

For higher end there are exclusive boutiques on the Rue du Mont Blanc (leading down from the station) and the Rue de la Croix d'Or and the Rue du Rhone, the main shopping streets.
I'm not quite sure what hints you are looking for but I'd say don't buy a Gucci watch. It's a cheap watch with an expensive name on it. If your partner is getting a Tag look at something similar (i.e. not a fashion watch) and you'll save a bundle.
