Hana Maui Botanical Gardens. An easy self guided walking tour of approximately 10 acres with a helpful hand drawn map. Free parking area with a $3 per person entrance fee. Mostly tropical flowers and fruits and most of the plants the Hawaiians brought in their canoes to help them survive. A good place to get out of the car and stretch.
Going the 'legal' route only puts you on the outside once. You will be on the inside on the way to Hana. I think you should watch some videos of the road. Many of the one lane bridges are suspended over gulches, and there are 54 of them. There are 617-649 hairpin curves on the road (depending on who counted).
