Mei Ho House, Mei Ho House originated from a devastating blaze that broke out in 1953 (later known as “Shek Kip Mei Fire”). The fire caused nearly 58,000 people homeless. In order to provide long term housing to the large number of fire victims, the government built the first batch of resettlement blocks (Block A to H) on the site of the fire.

History. Mei Ho during the 1956 riots. A banner can be clearly seen hanging from the building. After a devastating fire in December 1953 that left thousands homeless, the Colonial government built a 29-block resettlement estate on the site of the burnt-down shanties to house the homeless victims. 美荷樓 (英語: Mei Ho House ),位於清拆後分期重建的 石硤尾邨 ,1954年建成,是香港最早期、現時碩果僅存的「H」形6層 徙置大廈 [1] ,獲評為 二級歷史建築 [2] 。 石硤尾邨舊型大廈重建,第41座美荷樓則獲得保留,耗資2億2千萬 港元 改建為 美荷樓青年旅舍 及旗下之 美荷樓生活館 ,於2013年12月開幕。 歷史 [ 編輯] 雙十暴動 期間, 防暴隊 在 石硤尾徙置區 與群眾對峙,美荷樓外牆懸掛大型「雙十」徽牌(1956年) 國共內戰 前後,大批 中國大陸 難民湧港,石硤尾 木屋區 便是移民其中一個聚居地。 1953年12月25日晚, 石硤尾木屋區發生大火 ,造成3死51傷,並導致58,203人無家可歸。 港英政府在災場原址興建兩層高的包寧平房以及 徙置大廈 。
Mei Ho House was renamed as Block 15. To cope with the great demands for public housing, a Ten-Year Housing Target Programme was launched in 1972. The Housing Authority was set up for planning, building and managing all public housing estates in the following year.
Heritage of Mei Ho House. Mei Ho House was built as part of the Shek Kip Mei Estate to settle more than 50,000 refugees from China displaced by the Shek Kip Mei shantytown fire of 1953. When the rest of the estate was redeveloped to improve living conditions, the Grade II listed building was abandoned in 2005.
