So is it worth doing? & which is best time, either around 20th Dec or 2nd week in Jan 07. We also want to see Napier & Malborough Sounds.
The history of the Raurimu Spiral is a great engineering feat that allowed the railway line to pass through here. There's a carpark, then a short walk to an information panel and viewing platform. The trees across the valley have all grown, but there is a scale model that allows you to imagine what is there.

This is a unique corkscrew tunnel that allows you to drive to the top of the mountain entirely within the mountain. I've never seen anything like it. There are six complete spirals within the mountain. It's like driving up and down a very large parkade ramp.
